MEET YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Meet Derek Leyva

Born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Derek graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in Dance. He appeared in all three-dance companies at NMSU, which included Sol y Arena (flamenco and classical Spanish), Contemporary Dance Theater and DanceSport (ballroom). Derek also obtained his Smooth and Rhythm Bronze certification through Dance Vision while in New Mexico.

Spending a couple of years studying in New York City, Derek worked at Dance Manhattan, Ballroom Basix and Ballet Hispanico; as well as performed with Artist’s Lab’s Swing Set throughout the New York and New Jersey area.

In his current location, Jacksonville, FL, Derek teaches weekly classes and helps to run the Jax Westie Community. He travels the U.S. and Canada teaching, performing and competing with his professional partner Jennifer Norris. Together the two are part of a trio that run Jax Westie Fest.

Meet Jennifer Norris

Jennifer, a native Floridian, began dancing at the age of two-and-a-half. She is classically trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and contemporary dance, and has performed with multiple local and internationally recognized ballet companies.

Jennifer was introduced to the world of partner dancing by a friend back in college and competed on the amateur circuit for a couple of years before turning her focus to both American Rhythm and American Smooth as a professional. It wasn’t until years later that she discovered the freedom of expression and connection of west coast swing. It was love at first dance!

Currently living in Jacksonville, FL, she teaches and dances with the local Jax Westie dance community.

In addition, Jennifer enjoys traveling all over the U.S. and Canada teaching (which she has done since 1998), coaching, judging, performing, and competing with her professional partner, Derek Leyva.

In 2022, Derek and Jen took first place in the Sophisticated Routine division at The Open! And took second place in 2024.
