Sundays, February 8 and 22, 6:30-8:15 PM at St. Andrews Community Centre.

  • Who should attend: those who’ve already attended Basic or Improver level classes.
  • Come prepared with: an idea of a few things you’re working to improve.
  • Instructors will be there to provide feedback.
  • Free to attend, drop-in.

For first-timers to seasoned dancers! We’ll help you learn and improve the smooth, stylish and cool West Coast Swing style. No partner needed to take part—come solo or with a friend!

Our classes teach:

Patterns, proper technique, progressive movement, and musicality to make you a confident and creative improv dancer.

Experienced instruction, one-to-one feedback, challenges to help you improve, and a great time!

Learn West Coast Swing Basics

Perfect for those getting their first instruction in WCS, returning after a dance break, or Westie dancers who want to try the other role.

We’ll show you the basic patterns, how to move to the beat, and create connection to your dance partners.

BASICS

Made for those who are trying West Coast Swing for the first time. You don’t need any partner or dancing experience to join us. You’ll learn this cool dance style with other beginners and welcoming instructors!

You’ll learn:

  • Three foundation patterns that will get you on the dance floor.
  • West Coast Swing fundamentals like footwork and connection.
  • Creating improv-style dancing to contemporary music.

BASICS PLUS

We’ll build on your basic moves and you’ll feel more creative and confident dancing West Coast Swing.

You’ll learn:

  • Variations on your three foundation patterns–plus the whip!
  • Technique skills that make your dancing smoother and better connected.
  • Understanding how you can use musicality to have fund with songs.

In all our Basics classes

  • No partner or experience is necessary. We rotate dancers through the class.
  • Basics classes are a terrific way to try your non-primary role (lead or follow).
  • Be part of our fun, supportive dance community.

West Coast Swing Improver

For those dancers who’ve mastered the West Coast Swing basics, these progressive classes are how you:
  • strengthen your technique;
  • learn more challenging patterns;
  • add style and musicality to your dancing;
  • identify areas for improvement;
  • introduce concepts to vary your dancing;
  • learn skill-building exercises.

Each class or series focuses on a subject that helps you be a stronger, more creative, West Coast Swing dancer.

SERIES: Footwork technique and styling

How do the Pros get their smooth, gliding style? Want to react more to the music you hear? Much of West Coast Swing happens in your connection to the floor. We’ll be doing some drills and learning new options to move with confidence and flair in this Improver-level series.

PRACTICES: Improver-level feedback

Get support for what you’re working on from fellow dancers and our instructors. Practices build confidence and skill through feedback, so come prepared to seek help with a couple of things you want to work on.

These practice dates are for those who are comfortable with dancing basic patterns (passes, push break, tucks and whips) through a song.

  • May 25 and June 1, 5:15-6:15 PM
  • Location: 3380 Barnstead Lane, Halifax
  • No charge; drop-in
To participate in Improver-level classes, you must:
  • Be competent in these basic patterns and variations: push break (with tuck variation), left-side pass (with underarm turn variation), right-side pass, and basic whip.
  • Dance continuously and on time throughout a song.
  • Taken Basics and/or Improver classes in the past, or have equivalent experience.

No partner necessary; we rotate dancers through the class.
